Northern Edge Grant Application Deadline Extended
The application deadline for the Northern Edge Grant has been extended to April 17 at 5 p.m.! The Northern Edge Award is a new funding opportunity, Open to undergraduate and graduate students, that’s designed to augment existing funding sources for undergraduate scholarship. Poetry Open Mic Night
Williams Library, in conjunction with the NSU English Club, presents Poetry Open Mic Night at 7 p.m. Monday, April 17, in the Library Round Room. Come enjoy an evening of poetry. Bring poetry to share (yours or a favorite to read aloud). The event is open to all students, faculty and staff.

 

GOLD Series
We’re here for you during the final month of the semester-strive for GOLD with the Student Success Center!
?    The One About Preparing for Finals (RERUN), Monday, April 17, 7-8 p.m., MJ 146 | Virtual: It’s the finals countdown! The NSU Student Success Center invites students to this interactive workshop to learn about ways to maximize success on your finals! Noon Forums
The Spring 2023 Noon Forum series continues Wednesday, April 19, at noon in the Beulah Williams Library Round Room, featuring “Bullying in the Ivory Tower: What Happens in Higher Education,” with Bixi Qiao. Noon Forums, which are free and open to the public, are sponsored by Faculty Senate, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and the Center for Public History and Civic Engagement. The remaining topic for the semester is:
?    April 26: The Good Country: A History of the Midwest (Jon Lauck)

 

Ideation Workshop
Thunder Labs at Northern State University invites area residents to bring their creative ideas to an Ideation Workshop on Wednesday, April 19, 3-5:30 p.m. at the NSU Library. This is an interactive “no judging allowed” workshop designed to help aspiring tech entrepreneurs explore new, unusual, big and disruptive ideas in a supportive, low-risk environment. The workshop is free and open to the public, but space is limited—register today at this link!

 

Legislative and Budget Forum
Campus is invited to a legislative and budget forum, led by President Schnoor, on Wednesday, April 19. Two sessions will be held—one at noon in JFAC 181, and the other at 3 p.m. in JFAC 117.
 

Math Contest
Northern will host the 68th Annual Mathematics Contest on Wednesday, April 19, at the Barnett Center. High school students from around the area are invited to participate in one of four divisions: Elementary Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Senior Math. The contest awards ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. While the contest is closed to the public, members of the community are invited to attend the awards ceremony. Trophies will be awarded to the top five finishers in each division and a plaque will be presented to the coach of each first-place winner. The school in each class having the highest percentage combined score across all four divisions will be awarded a travelling trophy.

 

Employee Performance Awards
Northern will recognize employees for their years of service with the State of South Dakota on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at noon in the Kessler’s Champion Club.

AUCS Concert
The Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony invites you to a concert celebrating American music at 7:30 p.m. April 22. The concert, which will be held in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater, features winners of the NSU Concerto/Aria competition: Megan Dockter (clarinet) and Eli Houdyshell (Tenor). A Pre-Concert Conversation is scheduled for 6:45-7:15 p.m. in Berggren Recital Hall. Also on the concert is Jessica Mathaes, concertmaster of Austin (Texas) Symphony Orchestra. All tickets are general admission and will be available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and NSU faculty/staff. Students will be admitted for free. Payment will be cash or check only; debit or credit cards will not be accepted. The concert will also be livestreamed at the NSU Music Department Facebook page. NSU Football Blood Drive 
NSU football/ LifeServe Blood Center is putting on the annual blood drive on April 24, from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Kessler’s Champion’s Club. This blood drive has been the largest blood drive on campus and in Aberdeen for many years, and we would really like to keep that streak going this year. It would be great if you could help by your participation and/or your help in promoting the drive to your teams or departments. The goal is to get to at least 39 units donated throughout the day on April 24. We understand not everyone is excited about the thought of needles or giving blood, but your donation could help save lives locally.
How can your blood donation help?
?    Burn victims can receive up to 20 plasma units
?    Automobile accident victims can receive up to 50 units or red blood cells
?    Cancer patients can receive up to eight platelet units a week
?    Premature infants can receive up to five units
?    Heart surgery patients can use up to six units of red blood cells + six platelet units
?    Organ transplant patients can use up to 25 units of plasma + 30 platelet units + 40 units of red blood cells

Plant Sale
A plant sale will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, April 25! The sale, which is open to the public, will be located in MJ 144B (the classroom attached to the MJ greenhouse). It will feature succulents, geraniums, bulbs and more! Cash or check only.  

 

Attention May Graduates – Welcome to the NSU Alumni Association
The NSU Alumni Association has put together a gift for all the graduates, and will be handing them out on Wednesday, April 26, from 9-11 a.m. in the Student Center Lobby. This gift will include an NSU alumni coffee mug, a certificate for a free coffee from Einstein’s, a certificate for 25 percent off one item at the NSU Team Store, 30 percent off one item at the Wolf Shoppe, an alumni pin and a few other NSU items. Please stop by the table on April 26 to get your gift!

 

Jazz Swing Party 
The annual NSU Jazz Swing Party will be held 7-11:30 p.m. Friday, April 28. The public is invited to the event, which will feature live swing music at Engel’s Event Center, 209 S. Main St., Aberdeen. Performing will be Northern’s Two O’clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Grant Manhart, One O’clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Terry Beckler, and the Citrisity Band. Doors open at 6 p.m., with live swing music beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for NSU students. Tickets will be available at the door. Military Veterans Affairs News:
?    NSU Hosting American Legion Cording Ceremony: On May 3, 2023, from 6-7 p.m., Northern Military Veteran Affairs will host the American Legion Cording Ceremony for graduating Service Members and Veterans. The Aberdeen American Legion Post presents a red, white, and blue cord to graduates honoring and celebrating dedicated service to the U.S. and Aberdeen citizens. The ceremony will honor our past-present-future service members from Northern, Presentation College and several high schools in Aberdeen and the surrounding areas. Students wear the cords at commencement. The program is open to family, friends and the Aberdeen community. It is located in the lobby of Jewett Science Center, at the corner of 12th Avenue Southeast and South State Street. 
?    Honoring Air Force Reserve: Air Force Reserve Command is a major command of the United States Air Force. It is the federal Air Reserve Component of the U.S. Air Force, consisting of commissioned officers and enlisted airmen Founded April 14, 1948. Air Force Reserve currently performs about 20 percent of the work of the Air Force, traditional flying missions and other more specialized missions, such as weather reconnaissance, modular aerial firefighting and personnel recovery. Currently there is 82,308 airmen; 327 aircraft.
