Northern Academy to host College Planning Event
The Northern Academy will host a College Planning Event on March 27 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The event, which will take place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center’s Berggren Recital Hall, is open to high school students and families, educators, and community members. Attendees will learn about U.S. Department of Education financial aid changes and about the Northern Academy, an on-campus early college experience for area high-school students taking dual credit courses. Piano Recital
Dr. Kenneth Boulton and JoAnne Barry will present a recital of music for piano four-hands at 
7:30 p.m. Monday, March 27, in the Krikac Auditorium. Featured on the program will be music by Ethelbert Nevin, Jacques Ibert, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms. The recital is free and open to the public, and will also be live-streamed over the NSU Music Department Facebook page.

 

NSU Summer Job and Post-Graduate Fair, Tuesday, March 28, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Centennial Rooms
Do you need a job for the summer? Still haven’t found a position for after you graduate? Or, maybe you want to attend graduate school or seek opportunities abroad? Check out the Summer Job and Post-Graduate Fair to explore all the potential career options that are there for you now and in the future!

 

SDBOR Meeting at NSU
The Board of Regents will meet on the NSU campus on March 29-30. The agenda and Zoom information can be found at this link. The meeting will also be webcast through sd.net.

 

Northern Lights Launch Party 
The annual Northern Lights launch party is set for March 29, 2023, at 5 p.m. in the Lincoln Art Gallery (LH 115). Print issues will be available for purchase and preorder (cash or check accepted) at the launch party and afterward by contacting current President Madi Filber via email at madi.filber@wolves.northern.edu, who can also answer any questions via email. All students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome!

 

Science and Math Fair
Thursday, March 30, will be the 40th year of the Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair. The day starts out with approximately 50-60 judges from Aberdeen and surrounding areas judging projects and interviewing students. Projects will be judged in the morning and will be open for public viewing from 1-7 p.m. only in the Barnett Center gym. The science fair awards ceremony, open to the public and free of charge, will begin at 6 p.m. in Johnson Fine Arts Center Room 181. Junior and senior high science bowls, held in conjunction with the fair, will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The public is invited to attend.

Volunteer Judges needed for FBLA Event
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is seeking NSU School of Business faculty, staff and students to volunteer as judges for the upcoming FBLA conference, which will take place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 3 at the Aberdeen Ramkota. FBLA is a student organization that prepares its members for various careers in business administration, social media and marketing, consumer finance, graphic design, hospitality and many other fields. Industry expertise is invaluable for competitors to receive real-world feedback. No prior judging experience is needed. Lunch and snacks will be provided. GiveNDay is Coming! April 5-6, 2023
The Northern State Foundation is excited to host our third annual day of giving, GiveNDay, on April 5, 2023! This 24-hour challenge is designed to inspire all supporters of Northern to come together as we work to provide funding across the university.

Last year was a huge success as our community raised $330,000 from over 1,800 donors. Also known as #OneDayOnePack, this year’s goal is to receive support from 2,500 donors in 24 hours.

We need your help! We are looking for students, faculty or alumni to represent their school, department, organization or team as Ambassadors. As Ambassadors, you have the opportunity to share your love of NSU with your family and friends via social media, and potentially earn rewards while doing it! Interested? Noon Forums
The Spring 2023 Noon Forum series continues Wednesday, March 29, at noon in the Beulah Williams Library Round Room, featuring “Northern Innovation and Startup Center,” with Josh Latterell. Noon Forums, which are free and open to the public, are sponsored by Faculty Senate, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and the Center for Public History and Civic Engagement. Remaining topics for the semester are:

Senior Recital
Justin Desens and Tanner Pietz will hold their senior recital at 7:30 p.m. April 13 in Krikac Auditorium. Desens, who plays the tuba, will perform “Oboe Concerto in D minor, Op. 9 No. 2,” by Tomaso Albinoni; “Ordner Seg,” by ?ystein Baadsvik; and “Sonata for Tuba and Piano,” by Paul Hindemith. He will be accompanied by Sue Gates and Dr. Kenneth Boulton. Pietz, a bass/baritone, will perform “At the River,” “Watchman!” and “Charlie Rutlage,” by Charles Ives; “Lied Maritime” and “Madrigal,” by Vincent d'Indy; “Night,” by Florence Price; “For You There Is No Song,” by Leslie Adams; and “Der Nussbaum,” “Der Soldat” and “Widmung,” by Robert Schumann. Kay Fischer will accompany him.

 

Free Concert for Students 
Aberdeen Community Concert Association will present a concert, Chester Gregory - Tribute to Jackie Wilson and Friends, featuring 50s and 60s soul, R&B and rock-n-roll music. The concert is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. Northern students can attend this concert for free with student ID. Tickets are available at Interior Design Concepts, 21 N. Main St., and online at this link. For more information, call 605-228-0946.

 

Employee Performance Awards
Northern will recognize employees for their years of service with the State of South Dakota on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at noon in the Kessler’s Champion Club.

Math Contest
Northern will host the 68th Annual Mathematics Contest on Wednesday, April 19, at the Barnett Center. High school students from around the area are invited to participate in one of four divisions: Elementary Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Senior Math. The contest awards ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. While the contest is closed to the public, members of the community are invited to attend the awards ceremony. Trophies will be awarded to the top five finishers in each division and a plaque will be presented to the coach of each first-place winner. The school in each class having the highest percentage combined score across all four divisions will be awarded a travelling trophy.
