ABERDEEN, S.D. – Shayla Simons’ senior art exhibition will be on display in the Northern State University President’s Gallery from April 24 through May 8.
A reception for the exhibition will take place from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 24, in the President’s Gallery.
Simons grew up near Huron, graduating from Iroquois High School in 2013. She is the daughter of Myron Simons of Huron.
“My exhibition will feature colorful watercolors and oil paintings, as well as mixed media pieces combining watercolor, embroidery and beading, all of which examine various functions of the human mind such as dreams, thoughts and emotions, in conjunction with identity and psychology. A mixture of abstract and non-objective pieces will be shown, with some focus on landscapes and figurative subject matter,” mentioned Simons about the artwork she will display.
Simons is an art education and fine art major who primarily studied under NSU art faculty members Nadya Preszler, Sara Christensen-Blair, Peter Kilian and Greg Blair.
She will graduate from Northern in December upon completion of her senior student teaching experience. After graduation, she plans to procure an art education position. She would like to stay in South Dakota for at least the first three to 5 years of teaching. She also plans to make more art in hopes of bettering her craft.
“I chose to attend Northern because it wasn’t too far from home, offered a great amount of scholarships, and has a fantastic art department and faculty,” Simons said.
