ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C Micro-credentials are having a major impact¡ªand they¡¯re coming to Northern State University this spring.

What are micro-credentials? They're a learn-at-your-own-pace, non-credit bearing form of certification in a skill-based learning model. Completing a course earns you a digital badge¡ªwhich is instantly shareable and embedded with metadata, helping you get noticed.

Micro-credentials offer a more personalized, on-demand learning experience than full-length courses, said Joshua Citrak, NSU Director of Innovator Empowerment.

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C Northern State University will host a free Tech and Entrepreneurship Camp for area teens this summer¡ªand Northern is hiring peer mentors to work with youth at the camp.

The Tech and Entrepreneurship Camp, open to students entering grades 9-12 in fall 2023, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. The camp will run for five weeks, starting May 30 and running through June 27, on the NSU campus.

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C Northern State University Assistant Director of Financial Aid Morgan Stadler traveled to Washington, D.C., to attend a national conference for financial aid professionals.

Stadler attended the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) Leadership and Legislative Conference and Expo, which included networking, training, and an opportunity to visit Capitol Hill.

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C The Northern State University Speech and Debate Team made it to the national quarterfinals, with two students tying for fifth place in the nation.

Ethan Kurtz and Jacob Swanson finished as national quarterfinalists at the Pi Kappa Delta National Speech and Debate Tournament, tying for fifth place nationwide.

This tournament, held March 15-19 in Philadelphia, Pa., is the largest comprehensive speech and debate tournament in the country, said Dr. Justin Gus Foote, NSU¡­

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C Northern State University students Justin Desens and Tanner Pietz will hold their senior recital at 7:30 p.m. April 13 in Krikac Auditorium.

Desens, who plays the tuba, will perform ¡°Oboe Concerto in D minor, Op. 9 No. 2,¡± by Tomaso Albinoni; ¡°Ordner Seg,¡± by ?ystein Baadsvik; and ¡°Sonata for Tuba and Piano,¡± by Paul Hindemith. He will be accompanied by Sue Gates and Dr. Kenneth Boulton.

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C Northern State University will host the 68th Annual Mathematics Contest on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at the Barnett Center on the NSU campus.

High school students from around the area are invited to participate in one of four divisions: Elementary Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Senior Math.

Kenneth Boulton and JoAnne Barry will present a recital of music for piano four-hands at 
7:30 p.m. Monday, March 27, in the Krikac Auditorium.

Featured on the program will be music by Ethelbert Nevin, Jacques Ibert, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms.

Chad Hatzenbuhler has accepted the role of Director of Communications and Marketing and will join the NSU team April 3.

Hatzenbuhler brings to Northern a vast background in communications and marketing in the financial sector, working in both private and public banking. For the past year, he has worked as a Marketing Specialist at Aberdeen¡¯s Plains Commerce Bank. Prior to that, he spent over a decade¡­

ABERDEEN, S.D. ¨C Thursday, March 30, 2023, will be the 40th year of the Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair, sponsored by Northern State University, 3M of Aberdeen and the Aberdeen Area Community Foundation.  

The day starts out with approximately 50-60 judges from Aberdeen and surrounding areas judging projects and interviewing students.
