?If you are a United States citizen, you have the privilege to vote for county, state, and national leaders. Each state has its own laws about who may register and vote, and the deadlines by which voters must be registered. Students who are from other states may choose to register to vote in South Dakota or may vote absentee with their home state. Remember, you only need to do this if you haven't already registered to vote. Be sure to exercise your constitutional rights and vote!
South Dakota Residents
To register to vote as a South Dakota resident, obtain a voter registration form from the S.D. Secretary of State's Office or fill one out here: S.D. Voter Registration Form. Once you've completed the form, print and mail it to your county auditor's office. The addresses for all South Dakota county auditors are available at this S.D. Department of Revenue site: Contact County Auditors.
You may also register to vote at the following locations:
- County auditor's office
- Driver's license station (when you are renewing or applying for a driver's license you may also register to vote on the driver's license application)
- City finance office
- Public assistance agencies providing food stamps, TANF or WIC
- Department of Human Services offices which provide assistance to the disabled
- Military recruitment offices
For South Dakota residents, the voter registration form must be received at least 15 days before the election.
Residents of Other States
If your home state is other than South Dakota, use the national form available from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.
