Learn to succeed in a course from a student who already has. Northern’s Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a free program offering weekly collaborative reviews led by Northern students who serve as SI leaders.
The SI program provides academic support to students enrolled in certain courses. SI helps students learn study strategies and understand the subject. Support is provided through regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated sessions.
- Who can attend Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions? SI sessions are free and are open to all NSU students enrolled in a course with a designated SI leader.
- What happens in an SI session? SI leaders review course content and help students build relationships and community with classmates through collaborative learning.
- Trained student leaders: SI leaders help students develop general and subject-specific study skills. SI leaders are successful Northern students who have a passion for the subject and for helping students. SI leaders complete training, meet with faculty, and create learning plans for each SI session.
- How are SI leaders chosen? Faculty recommend the SI leaders for their courses. If you are interested in serving as an SI leader, contact your faculty member.
- Find courses that offer SI sessions: SI is available for to specific courses. Check your syllabus or ask your professor if SI is available for your course. SI sessions also are listed on the Student Success Calendar and myNSU homepage calendar.
